Wendy is a dressmaker and designer by trade and has been involved in patchwork for over 20 years. She initially worked with English piecing methods with a variety of shapes before progressing to machine piecing. She has a strong interest in colour, value, scale and balance.

Wendy has taught for many years starting with samplers for beginners and then forming a partnership with Suzen Bornman. She teaches on a regular basis at Quiltec on the West Rand and has been travelling far and wide teaching patchwork to people as far away as Swaziland. In order to keep her knowledge fresh and up to date she continually takes classes with our own local as well as international teachers and has visited and attended classes at the Houston Quilt Festival.

She was accepted to teach at the National Quilt Festival held in South Africa in 2008 and is a registered teacher with the Golden Rand Guild.

Through her happy and outgoing character, Wendy has gained popularity as a teacher.

Suzen was introduced to quilting about 15 years ago and has been teaching for several years and is passionate about sharing this wonderful craft and loves ‘converting’ non-quilters and introducing them to quilting. She keeps up to date with the latest trends by taking classes with local as well as international teachers i.e. at the Houston Festival.

Suzen’s favourite technique is English piecing and hand quilting but she has also mastered the art of free hand machine quilting.

She is fondest of scrappy, informal quilts and she also very much enjoys making and teaching the more informal, unmeasured piecing techniques.

She teaches regularly at Quiltec, and is a registered teacher with the Golden Rand Guild and a member of the South African Quilters Guild.

The wonderful combination of a passion for quilting and the skill and temperament to teach others, makes her a popular teacher.

Firstly I am married and have 3 children – a daughter and 2 sons plus 2 granddaughters. Piet, my husband, and I have been retired since 2006. We are very fortunate that we are both young and healthy enough to enjoy this period in our life. We are able to caravan a couple of times a year but mostly just to be able to enjoy being at home and spending time together. We have a number of interests so there is no getting bored or frustrated with each other.

After trying my hand at many arts and crafts I finally settled with patchwork and quilting. This may be due to the fact that I have always loved sewing. It does not matter what kind of sewing whether it be dressmaking, novelties or fun things and I have done a few.

After doing a quilting beginners course in 2001 I was hooked. Of all the facets of quilting I find patchwork the most appealing. Because of my nature, I am attracted to blocks and symmetrical shapes in particular. However I do appreciate all the other forms of quilting be it art, hand quilting, appliqué etc. I am also not mad about handwork and my motto is that “Life is too short to do anything by hand”. Having said this I have at least tried most forms of quilting and always encourage others to do so.

I live in Mondeor, Johannesburg, and have been quilting and teaching for more that 20 years. I am a partner in a quilt shop together with my daughter Suanne. UMNYAMA has been in business for 10 years. In the last few years, I have taught quilting at the NQF in Alberton and Stellenbosch, in George, the West Rand, East Rand, as well as teaching a variety of subjects at our own shop in Mondeor.

My expertise is general, and I have travelled a number of times to quilt festivals in America where I attend lessons with many different teachers. I keep up with the latest trends and study continually from the various quilting publications that we subscribe to. My everyday job is that of a long-arm quilter, as well as submitting projects for the Stitches and Craftwise magazines.

I like to help my students to each produce work pleasing to their own tastes. I aim to make my workshops relaxed and fun and am teased for my words “we will work it out!”

My classes are usually inspired by my own ideas, but these classes have been proved to be successful, as well as leaving scope to introduce different ideas such as new rulers and quick-cutting methods for the busy quilter.

I organise and run two weekend Retreats a year with the help of others. The first is in March and the second in October. The aim of the Retreats is to give quilters, particularly those who do not have time to attend scheduled lessons, two full days in which to learn new skills, both from me and from fellow quilters.

We offer an Open Day at UMNYAMA in January of every year. This takes the form of a mini Quilt Show at which we display examples of quilts we intend teaching during the coming year.

We also hold an annual celebration of our birthday – Christmas in July.

Fabric Dyeing -Free Play In Full Colour: Would you like to learn how to work with dye in many colours? This fun class teaches you how to create a variety of different patterns with different binding techniques, as well as how to do multi-colour dyeing. You will leave the class with a selection of different fabric samplers with different techniques. This class truly is free lay in full colour, and it is easier than most people think.

A Dozen Basic Binding Techniques – Would you like to learn how to bind different tie dye patterns? In this class we look at different binding techniques so that you can learn how to make different textures and geometric patterns. Learn how to make crushes, camouflage, circles, stripes, diamonds, checks and many other patterns. Become master of creating the patterns that you want for your specific outcome.

Dip Dyeing – Dip dyeing is a classic finish that has enjoyed a revival in the fashion industry in recent years. You will often see it strutting down the catwalk of fashion shows in New York and Milan. The name “Dip Dyeing” leads many people to believe that it is a very simple finish where you just dip the fabric in the colour and you are done. Dip dyeing is actually a very technical finish, which is why we need a whole class for it on its own. In this class you will learn how to master the art of bleeding a smooth even coat of colour gently onto the border of your fabric. This class is particularly useful for fashion designers who want to reduce costs by bringing such finishes in-house.

Lino Block Making – Would you like to learn how to make your own hand carved stamps for printing on fabric, card, pvc, wood, leather, candles and many other surfaces? Do you feel limited by the range of ready-made stamps that are on the market? Would you like to see your own designs come to life? Would you like to make some really big stamps because the ones that are available in stores are just so small? Lino block making is really easy and most people can master the basic technique in one class. This class will set you free to print your own graphic images on just about anything. This is a useful class for scrap bookers as well.

Two-Day Intensive Printing Course -Printing With Found Objects – We spend a whole day learning how to print fabrics with items that you find around your house. I will also teach you how to make re-usable stamps using things that you will find in your dustbin. This activity has a high fun factor and you will return home with “new eyes” for the world around you.

How do I book my place in a Slipstream class? – Request a class schedule via e-mail at info@dyeandprints.co.za

My life with crafts started 28 years ago as a weaver, spinner and dyer. My involvement with quilting started 25 years ago as a means to decorate my home with beautiful bed quilts. As I learned more about this wonderful craft, was involved with different quilting groups and was exposed to so many other techniques I have veered towards “Art Quilting”.

I am continually learning and trying new techniques and find the challenge of expressing myself artistically through the medium of textiles exhilarating. One of my biggest loves is “altering cloth”, so I am at my happiest dyeing, stamping, silk screening etc and in general creating a unique fabric to include in my quilts.

I served as the Chairlady of the Johannesburg Weavers and Spinners Guild for 5 years and as TAGG Chairlady for one. I was also the Chairlady of the organising committee for the TAGG exhibitions in 2009 and 2011.

Since January 2007 I have been running a home group which meets in my home every 1st Tuesday of the month. In this group we explore different techniques such as dyeing, printing, stencilling, using Tyvek and other unconventional materials to incorporate in our art quilting.

We have also dealt with exercises to improve creativity and use of composition
